9/8/2014 – First Lab Meeting of Fall

In our first weekly lab meeting of the fall term, Steve Bennett presented some of his preliminary ideas for research in the classroom. As a lab, we evaluated different methods of evaluating how students respond to feedback in the classroom. During the rest of the meeting, we decided new lab meeting times, discussed Institutional Review Board (IRB) and Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) requirements, and we went over other general lab procedures. Next week, we look forward to analyzing Scott Freeman’s paper titled “Active learning increases student performance in science, engineering, and mathematics”. We plan on using this to not only stimulate group discussion, but also as a bridge for us to look at other areas of research in science education.
